Claude Code: Essentials

A plain-language introduction to Claude Code for people who don't write code. Learners open Claude Code, hand it everyday work — organizing files, summarizing documents, cleaning up spreadsheets, drafting from data — and learn how to describe what they want, give it context, review what it proposes, and stay in control. By the end they can run a real task end-to-end and know when to bring in a technical colleague.

What this course covers

The course runs across 8 topics, each one a short adaptive session rather than a recorded lecture. The tutor explains the idea, works an example, checks understanding, and adjusts the next step to the answer given.

  • What Claude Code Is — and Isn't — Meet Claude Code as an AI teammate that can read, organize, and change files and run tasks on your behalf, not just answer questions. Learn where it lives (terminal, desktop app, or code editor), what 'agentic' means in everyday terms, and the kinds of work people outside engineering hand to it.
  • Your First Session — Open Claude Code, sign in, point it at a folder of your own files, and make your first request. Learn to read what it says back, what the approval prompts are asking, and how to end a session cleanly.
  • Describing What You Want — Learn to ask for outcomes instead of steps: say what 'done' looks like, name the files that matter, ask for a plan before any changes, and follow up when the first result isn't quite right.
  • Everyday Work You Can Hand Off — Work through a gallery of real tasks by role — tidy and rename a messy folder, summarize a set of documents, clean up a spreadsheet, turn meeting notes into a report, draft emails from a data file — and run two of them on your own files.
  • Giving It Memory: The CLAUDE.md Note — Create a short 'how we work' note that Claude Code reads every time: your naming conventions, tone, where things live, and what never to touch. See how it changes results and how to keep it current.
  • Staying in Control: Permissions, Review, and Undo — Practice reading a proposed change before approving it, asking for a dry run, undoing something you didn't want, and deciding what Claude Code should never do without you (sending, deleting, paying, publishing).
  • Working Safely with Company Data — Decide what's fine to hand over and what isn't, handle sensitive files and customer information, follow your company's AI policy, and verify outputs before they go anywhere.
  • Making It Repeatable — Turn a one-off task into a routine you can rerun: save the prompt, name the steps, know when to ask for a scheduled or recurring version, and recognize when a task is big enough to hand to a technical colleague. Capstone: run one real task from request to reviewed result.
