Claude Cowork: Essentials

A practical introduction to getting real work done with Claude Cowork. Learners connect folders, set the right permission mode, describe outcomes instead of steps, and produce finished documents, spreadsheets and research from their own files — while learning to review, correct and stay in control.

What this course covers

The course runs across 8 topics, each one a short adaptive session rather than a recorded lecture. The tutor explains the idea, works an example, checks understanding, and adjusts the next step to the answer given.

  • Chat or Cowork? Picking the Right Mode — Recognize which requests belong in a chat and which deserve a Cowork session, and how to hand work from one to the other.
  • Connecting a Folder and Choosing a Permission Mode — Connect a folder, understand what Cowork can and can't touch, and choose between Manual (ask before each action), Auto (safety-checked) and Skip approval modes for the task at hand.
  • Describing Outcomes, Not Steps — Write requests that say what 'done' looks like, name the files that matter, ask for a plan first, and steer with follow-ups.
  • Producing Real Deliverables — Have Cowork build a formatted Word document, a spreadsheet with working formulas, and a short slide deck from raw material in your folder.
  • Research and Synthesis — Combine a set of files and web research into a briefing, with sources, and iterate until it's ready to share.
  • Standing Instructions: Global and Folder Rules — Set global instructions for every session and folder instructions for specific projects (tone, naming, where things live, what never to touch) and see how they change results.
  • Review, Correct, Undo — Practice reading a proposed change before approving, asking for a dry run, correcting a wrong turn, and recovering when something was changed that shouldn't have been.
