What's New in Gemini for Everyone
A short refresher on the latest Gemini for Everyone updates
What this course covers
The course runs across 7 topics, each one a short adaptive session rather than a recorded lecture. The tutor explains the idea, works an example, checks understanding, and adjusts the next step to the answer given.
- Skills: saved instructions you call with a slash — What's different: Gemini now has skills, saved sets of instructions you can run by typing / and the skill's name, and you can stack several skills in one chat. Why it matters for your work: You can save how you like a task done once, like a weekly report format, and reuse it without retyping your instructions. Try it (about 2 minutes): In a Gemini chat, ask Gemini to turn a task you repeat into a skill, then start a new chat, type / and pick that skill by name. No access? Here's what you'd see: Gemini now allows users to run saved instruction sets by typing a slash and stack multiple skills in a single chat.
- Gems are being retired in favor of skills — What's different: Google will stop supporting Gems: personal accounts in November 2026, work accounts in March 2027 and school accounts in June 2027, and leftover Gems will be turned into skills. Why it matters for your work: If you rely on a Gem for your work, you should move it to a skill before it stops working. Try it (about 2 minutes): Open one of your Gems, copy its name, description and instructions, then create a new skill with the same text and add its files again.
- Create and edit files right inside a Gemini chat — What's different: Gemini can now make, preview and edit slide decks, spreadsheets, documents, PDFs and text or code files inside the chat, then send them to Google Slides, Sheets or Drive or download them. Why it matters for your work: You can go from an idea to a finished file without leaving the chat or copying text between apps. Try it (about 2 minutes): Ask Gemini to make a three-slide outline for a team update, open the preview in full screen, type one change directly, then use the option to open it in Google Slides. No access? Here's what you'd see: Gemini now displays options to create, preview, and edit files directly in the chat, then download them or send them to Google Drive.
- Make Docs, Sheets and Slides from any Workspace app — What's different: Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Slides, Drive and Chat can now create a new doc, sheet or deck, draft and send emails, schedule meetings and add tasks without you leaving the app. Why it matters for your work: You can turn an email thread or meeting notes into a document or deck in one step instead of copying content between apps. Try it (about 2 minutes): Open a project email in Gmail, open the Gemini side panel, and ask: "Create a tracker for this project in a new spreadsheet."
- A new frontier Gemini model for paid plans — What's different: Google released a new top-tier Gemini 4 model, Argon, for Google AI Pro and Ultra users in the Gemini app and for developers in the API and Antigravity. Why it matters for your work: It is built for long, multi-step work like analyzing reports or building decks, and it gives shorter, more direct answers. Try it (about 2 minutes): Open the model menu in the Gemini app, choose the new Gemini 4 model, and give it a multi-step task, such as turning a long report into a summary table. No access? Here's what you'd see: Paid users will see a new Gemini 4 model named Argon in their model menu.
- Also new — - Ask Gemini in Chat replaces the Chat side panel: Ask Gemini replaces the Google Chat side panel, adding search, drafting, and scheduling features. - Edit a whole Slides deck with one Gemini prompt: Gemini in Google Slides can now edit an entire presentation from a single prompt. - Customize menu for skills and connected apps: A new Customize option in the left menu centralizes skills and connected apps. - Switch from chat to tasks so Gemini works for you: A new toggle lets you switch from chat to tasks so Gemini can work in the background. - Gemini desktop app for Windows: A new Gemini desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 launches with a keyboard shortcut. - Sheets canvas turns a spreadsheet into a mini-app: Gemini in Google Sheets can now build interactive canvas views like task boards and dashboards. - Automatic model selection by default: Gemini now automatically selects a suitable model by default for new chats. - Skills managed in Customize menu with automatic activation: Skills are now managed in the Customize menu and can be triggered automatically by Gemini. - Meet notes now open with a one-page Quick notes: Google Meet notes now default to a one-page Quick notes summary tab. - Your Gemini instructions now apply in more Workspace apps: Custom instructions for Gemini now apply across Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Chat. - and 1 more: Immersive explorations: interactive visual topic guides
- Try one on your own work — Pick the one main change from this course that is most useful to your job. Try it in your own Gemini for Everyone on a real task, then paste or describe what you got. The coach gives short, specific feedback. No access to the app or plan it needs? Describe how you would use it on a real task this week. That counts too. There is no score and no pass or fail: finishing this completes the course.
Skills you build
Results are measured against named skills in the OneRange taxonomy of more than 10,000 skills, so a manager sees proficiency per skill rather than a completion tick.
