GitHub Copilot training
Vero AI Catalog › GitHub Copilot training
For software developers, engineering leads and platform owners already using GitHub Copilot who want more than autocomplete. 9 courses run from inline suggestions and chat through agent mode, custom instructions and Copilot code review to cloud agent hand-offs, MCP and org-wide rollout. Start with the GitHub Copilot placement check: it places developers at Essentials, Core, Advanced or Mastery so you can assign the right starting point.
OneRange Vero, the AI-native training platform, delivers these courses as interactive training rather than recorded videos. Practice adapts to the person's answers, and results map to named skills. The GitHub Copilot Pathway certificate covers the four ladder courses at a typical pace of 9.5 hours. Four optional playbooks cover testing, code review, refactoring and migration, and docs and onboarding; they can be taken after Essentials and do not count toward the certificate. Assign a course to one developer, a playbook to a team, or the pathway across your engineering organisation.

The GitHub Copilot ladder
- GitHub Copilot: Essentials — Coding with GitHub Copilot — The developer starting point for the GitHub Copilot family: coding with GitHub Copilot. Learners get access and sign in, work with inline suggestions, use chat in the editor with the right context, choose between ask, plan and agent, use Copilot Chat on github.com, and review everything Copilot produces. Ends with a fix-and-explain lab. (Level: beginner · 90 minutes · TUL-GHC-101)
- GitHub Copilot: Core — Agent Mode, Code Review & Cloud Agent Hand-offs — The working level of GitHub Copilot after Essentials. Developers run agent mode on multi-file tasks and review every edit, choose context on purpose, set up repository custom instructions and prompt files, respond to Copilot code review on pull requests, hand their first issues to Copilot cloud agent, use Copilot on github.com and keep company code safe. Ends with one change taken through the whole workflow. (Level: intermediate · 150 minutes · TUL-GHC-201)
- GitHub Copilot: Advanced — Agentic Engineering with GitHub Copilot — Agentic engineering with GitHub Copilot for developers who set up how their team works with agents. Learners pick the right surface per job, layer custom instructions, define custom agents with scoped tools, add skills, hooks and MCP servers, run Copilot CLI interactively and in scripts, prepare cloud agent's environment, use code review as a gate, not an approval, and measure and govern agent work. Ends with a team agent setup used on one real change. (Level: advanced · 150 minutes · TUL-GHC-251)
- GitHub Copilot: Mastery — Org Rollout, Governance & Agent Operations — Running GitHub Copilot across an engineering organisation. Leads set enterprise and organisation policies and model access, apply content exclusion at scale, enforce Copilot code review with rulesets, build cloud agent environments with allowlists and secrets, govern MCP servers, read usage metrics honestly, measure quality impact, plan the rollout and handle incidents. Ends with an org rollout and governance plan plus a pilot repository setup. (Level: expert · 180 minutes · TUL-GHC-301)
Optional playbooks for specific work
- GitHub Copilot: Essentials — Testing Playbook — A focused playbook for testing with GitHub Copilot. Learners use Copilot Chat to write unit and edge-case tests for untested code, find the root cause of a test that fails on its own and make it deterministic, and prove their tests really guard the rules by breaking the code on purpose. They leave with a repeatable way to get tests from Copilot that catch bugs instead of locking them in. About 45 minutes including the final. (Level: beginner · 45 minutes · TUL-GHC-121)
- GitHub Copilot: Essentials — Code Review Playbook — A focused playbook for code review with GitHub Copilot. Learners ask Copilot Chat for a specific, line-referenced review of a pull request written by a coding agent, covering correctness, security, risky edits and missing tests, then check every finding against the code and decide which AI review comments to accept. They leave with a review routine that uses Copilot as a second pair of eyes without trusting it blindly. About 45 minutes including the final. (Level: beginner · 45 minutes · TUL-GHC-122)
- GitHub Copilot: Essentials — Refactoring & Migration Playbook — A focused playbook for safe refactoring and migration with GitHub Copilot. Learners pin today's behaviour with characterization tests, use Copilot Chat to rename, extract a function and simplify legacy code in small behaviour-preserving steps, then migrate off a deprecated Python call without breaking anything. They leave with a step-by-step routine that keeps every refactor protected by tests. About 45 minutes including the final. (Level: beginner · 45 minutes · TUL-GHC-123)
- GitHub Copilot: Essentials — Docs & Onboarding Playbook — A focused playbook for documentation and onboarding with GitHub Copilot. Learners use Copilot Chat to explain an unfamiliar module, audit an out-of-date README, write a new README and doc comments, and produce a handoff note in which every claim is traced to a line of code. They leave with docs a new teammate can trust and a habit of checking Copilot's claims against the code. About 45 minutes including the final. (Level: beginner · 45 minutes · TUL-GHC-124)

Prove the skill
- GitHub Copilot: Placement Check — Start here. The placement check places developers at Essentials, Core, Advanced or Mastery so you can assign training from the right level.
- GitHub Copilot: Mastery Exam — The GitHub Copilot Mastery Exam checks the skills covered at the top of the ladder.
Pathways that include these courses
- GitHub Copilot Pathway — Coding with GitHub Copilot, from first suggestions to running it across an engineering org: inline suggestions, chat and agent basics (Essentials); agent mode, custom instructions, Copilot code review and first cloud agent hand-offs (Core); custom agents, MCP, Copilot CLI and cloud agent environments (Advanced); and policies, metrics, rollout and incident response at org scale (Mastery). Also includes 4 optional playbooks (Testing, Code Review, Refactoring & Migration, Docs & Onboarding) to take any time after Essentials; they don't count toward the certificate.
How the training works
Every course here is delivered by OneRange Vero as an interactive session. There is no video to sit through and no slide deck to click past: the tutor explains an idea, works an example, asks the person to try it, and adjusts what comes next to the answer it gets back. Practice, scenarios, labs and role-plays are part of the session rather than an add-on.
Courses can be grounded in your own material, so examples, terminology and policies match how your company actually works. Results map to named skills in the OneRange taxonomy of more than 10,000 skills, so a manager sees proficiency per skill instead of a completion tick. Assign to one person, a team or the whole company, and track progress from the Vero dashboard.
Frequently asked questions
Where should developers start?
Start with the GitHub Copilot placement check. It places developers at Essentials, Core, Advanced or Mastery, so experienced developers do not have to start at the beginning.
How long does the pathway take?
The GitHub Copilot Pathway certificate covers four required ladder courses totalling 9.5 hours at a typical pace. The four optional playbooks add three hours of practice and do not count toward the certificate. Sessions adapt to what each person already knows.
How is it assigned to a team?
An administrator assigns it from the Vero dashboard to one person, a team, a department or everyone at once. Progress and results appear per person and per skill, so a manager can see who has finished, who is mid-course, and where the remaining gaps are.
Can we customise it with our own documents and terminology?
Yes. An administrator can add your company's own standing instructions, examples and documents so the course teaches the tool in the context of your systems, terminology and policies, without changing the underlying catalog course. See how the customization layer works on the Vero page.
Is this the same as Microsoft Copilot training?
No. This track covers GitHub Copilot for software development and engineering operations. Microsoft Copilot has a separate track for Microsoft 365 daily work, Copilot Studio agents and Microsoft 365 Copilot extensions for developers.
