Grok: Essentials — Writing & Communication

Learners use Grok to draft, edit and adapt everyday workplace writing: shaping tone for different audiences, summarizing long threads, rewriting and translating, and keeping everything on-brand with a reusable style-guide Skill. They also see how the Word and Outlook add-ins bring the same help into the documents and inbox they already use, and leave able to turn messy notes into a polished message in minutes.

What this course covers

The course runs across 8 topics, each one a short adaptive session rather than a recorded lecture. The tutor explains the idea, works an example, checks understanding, and adjusts the next step to the answer given.

  • What Grok does well (and badly) in writing — Grok is quick at first drafts, rewrites, tone changes and summaries, but it can invent names, numbers, quotes or dates and it only knows your situation from what you give it. Learners see both sides on a short example and learn the habit of checking every fact before sending.
  • Drafting and editing in chat — Give Grok the purpose, the reader, the length and the key facts, and attach source notes with the + button. Then improve the draft with short follow-ups such as 'shorter', 'keep the second paragraph' or 'list what you changed'.
  • Shaping tone, voice and audience — Practise asking for the same message in different tones (warm, firm, neutral) and for different readers, from a customer to the leadership team. Learners compare versions and pick the one that fits.
  • Summarizing long threads and documents — Paste or attach a long email thread, transcript or report and ask for a summary in a fixed shape, such as decisions, owners, deadlines and open questions. Learners check the summary against the source so nothing important is dropped or made up.
  • Rewriting, formatting and translating — Turn bullet notes into an email, an email into a short chat message, or a long paragraph into a table, and translate a message while keeping its meaning and tone. Learners ask a fluent colleague to check important translations before they go out.
  • Your style guide as a reusable Skill — A Skill teaches Grok something once and reuses it in every chat. Learners turn a short house style guide into a Skill by describing it or uploading the file (or with the built-in Skill Creator) and test it in a fresh chat.
  • Writing in Word and Outlook with the Grok add-ins — If your company allows add-ins, the Grok add-ins from the Microsoft Marketplace bring drafting and rewriting into Word, and thread summaries, reply drafts and inbox triage into Outlook (the Outlook add-in needs a paid plan). Outlook drafts are never sent without you, so you always review and press Send yourself.
  • Scenario: a difficult message — A simulated situation where an upset customer or colleague needs a reply: learners use Grok to draft, adjust tone after each reaction, and decide what must stay human. It brings together drafting, tone and the style Skill.

Skills you build

Results are measured against named skills in the OneRange taxonomy of more than 10,000 skills, so a manager sees proficiency per skill rather than a completion tick.

Who it is for

Writers, comms, all employees. The material is pitched at beginner level, and takes roughly 90 minutes at a typical pace. Because every session adapts, someone who already knows a topic moves through it quickly instead of sitting through an explanation they do not need.

It sits in the Tool: Grok track of the Vero AI Catalog, and can be assigned to one person, a team, or the whole company.

How it is delivered and assessed

Delivery is conversational and interactive, including guided lab, role play, branching scenario exercises. There is no video to sit through and no slide deck to click past.

Understanding is checked with a lab assessment of 5 items, with a pass mark of 70%.

Administrators can copy this course into their own library and adapt it — edit the outline, change the duration, swap the assessment format, or ground it in internal documentation so answers cite the company's own source material.

Also in this track

  • Grok for Developers: Essentials — Code Review Playbook — A focused playbook for reviewing code with Grok. Learners attach a pull request written by a coding agent to a grok.com chat, ask for severity-ranked, line-referenced findings on correctness, security, risky edits and missing tests, then check each finding against the code instead of trusting it. They leave with a review prompt they can reuse and a short, defensible set of review comments. About 45 minutes including the final.
  • Grok for Developers: Essentials — Refactoring & Migration Playbook — A focused playbook for safe refactoring and migration with Grok. Learners pin a legacy reminder job's behaviour with characterisation tests, then use a grok.com chat to rename, extract a helper and move off a deprecated Python date function in small steps, checking the tests after each one. They leave with a step-by-step refactor pattern and a migration that changes nothing users see. About 45 minutes including the final.
  • Grok: Essentials — Research Playbook — A focused playbook for doing research in Grok. Learners run live searches across the web and X with citations, dig into their own files and connected sources, and check every claim - including deciding how much weight an X post deserves - so they leave with a research routine they can trust the same day. About 45 minutes including the final.
  • Grok for Developers: Essentials — Testing Playbook — A focused playbook for testing with Grok. Learners attach a small library-fee module and its shaky tests to a grok.com chat, use Grok to diagnose a failing test and a date-dependent one, write unit and edge-case tests from the written policy, and break the code on purpose to prove the tests really catch bugs. They leave with a reusable prompt pattern for test work and the habit of checking every test themselves, by running it or by tracing it. About 45 minutes including the final.
  • Grok for Developers: Essentials — Docs & Onboarding Playbook — A focused playbook for documentation and onboarding with Grok. Learners use a grok.com chat to explain an unfamiliar room-pricing module, catch the false claims in its outdated README, and write a corrected README, doc comments and a handoff note, checking every claim against the code by reading or running it. They leave with a documentation prompt pattern and the habit of verifying before they publish. About 45 minutes including the final.
  • Grok for Everyone Pathway — Complete fluency in Grok for any role: from your first question to Search, files, Skills, connectors and Automations. Also includes 4 optional playbooks (Writing & Communication, Research, Data & Analysis, Coding) to take any time after Essentials; they don't count toward the certificate.
