Grok: Essentials

A practical introduction to getting real work done with Grok. Learners find their way around grok.com and the apps, write clear prompts, work with documents, spreadsheets and images, get live answers with sources from the web and X, and learn what not to share. By the end they can confidently use Grok for everyday writing, analysis and research.

What this course covers

The course runs across 10 topics, each one a short adaptive session rather than a recorded lecture. The tutor explains the idea, works an example, checks understanding, and adjusts the next step to the answer given.

Grok at work: what it is and how your company set it up — What Grok is (xAI's AI assistant on grok.com, the iOS and Android apps and inside X) and the two ways people get it at work: a company plan with a Team workspace, or a personal account. Check which one you have and what your company's AI policy allows before you start.
Getting around grok.com and the apps; Personal and Team workspaces — Sign in on grok.com or the apps (chats sync across them), start, find and rename chats, and use the mode switcher to pick what your screen offers. Switch between Personal and Team workspaces with the selector at the bottom left so company work stays in the Team workspace.
Prompting foundations — Write prompts that give Grok who it is writing as, the task, the reader, the background and the format you want. Improve the answer with short follow-ups instead of starting over.
Prompting with examples and step-by-step reasoning — Paste an example of the output you want so Grok copies its tone and layout, and ask Grok to work through a problem step by step and show its working so you can check each step.
Working with files: documents, spreadsheets and images — Attach files with + next to the message box (or drag them in on the web) and ask Grok to summarise a document, total and compare spreadsheet columns, or read a photo or screenshot. Check key numbers yourself, and delete files you no longer need at grok.com/files.
Search: live answers with citations from the web and X — Ask about recent news and get answers with sources from the web and X posts. Ask for a link and date for every point, open the sources, and treat X posts as opinions or early signals, not confirmed facts.
Connectors: email, calendar and files in chat (admin setup on business plans) — Connect tools such as Gmail and Google Calendar, Outlook, Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams at grok.com/connectors (New Connector, then sign in) so Grok can use them in chat. On business plans your admin must add each connector first; if yours isn't there, ask your admin and upload the file instead.
Images and video with Grok Imagine, and when not to use them at work — Create and refine images and short videos from a description or a photo with Grok Imagine; outputs carry a watermark. Follow your company's rules: no pictures of real people or other companies' logos, and never use a generated image where accuracy matters, such as product photos or safety diagrams.
Data controls and what not to share — Find Profile, Settings, Data Controls on grok.com and know how your plan treats your data (business plan data is not used for training). Never paste passwords, payment details, customers' personal data or confidential material your company hasn't approved for Grok.
Putting it together: a real task end to end — Complete a realistic task with the course sample pack: draft a customer reply in the right tone, analyse a sales spreadsheet, check a current fact against its sources, and decide what you would and would not share.
