Codex for Everyone: Advanced — Multi-Step Tools & Agents

The advanced level for business builders whose Codex tools now have several steps or several users. Learners plan before building, split a bigger tool into steps they can each check, write rules in AGENTS.md that keep Codex consistent, save routines as skills, connect work apps carefully, hand work off to Codex in the cloud if their plan includes it, choose how much Codex may do without asking, and keep secrets and company data out. No code.

What this course covers

The course runs across 10 topics, each one a short adaptive session rather than a recorded lecture. The tutor explains the idea, works an example, checks understanding, and adjusts the next step to the answer given.

  • Planning before building with Plan mode — Switch to Plan mode so Codex asks questions and proposes a plan before it builds anything. Learners edit the plan until every step is clear and checkable.
  • Breaking a bigger tool into steps you can check — Split a multi-step tool into three to five small steps, build one at a time, and test each against answers worked out by hand before moving on.
  • AGENTS.md: written rules that keep Codex consistent, in plain language — Write the rules Codex reads at the start of every session: which files to use, what never to touch, how to explain changes. Keep them short and add one only when Codex repeats a mistake.
  • Undoing changes safely — Work in a copy of your files, review what Codex changed before keeping it, and ask it to undo a change that made things worse. Learners set up a simple habit of saving versions before each step.
  • Saving routines as skills (if skills are available to you) — Turn a routine you repeat - such as 'check this week's file and list the problems' - into a skill Codex can reuse, so it is done the same way every time.
  • Connecting to work apps, and why approvals matter (if your company allows it) — Plugins and connections let Codex reach work apps, using your access. Learners decide which connections a tool really needs and why approval prompts should stay on.
  • Handing off work to Codex in the cloud (if your plan includes it) — Cloud tasks keep running when your laptop is closed and can be checked later from your phone or the web. Learners decide which jobs suit a hand-off and how to review the result.
  • Permission settings: how much Codex may do without asking — Compare read-only, editing files in this folder, and asking before anything outside it. Learners keep the defaults and choose the least access a task needs.
  • Keeping secrets and company data out — A written rule is not a lock. Learners keep secret files out of the folder entirely, use fake data until a tool is trusted, and never paste passwords or customer records into a request.
  • Capstone: a multi-step team tool — Plan, build and check a multi-step tool one step at a time, with written rules, a saved routine, and a handover note a teammate can follow.

Skills you build

Results are measured against named skills in the OneRange taxonomy of more than 10,000 skills, so a manager sees proficiency per skill rather than a completion tick.

Who it is for

Business builders whose Codex tools other people now use (after Codex for Everyone: Core). The material is pitched at advanced level, and takes roughly 150 minutes at a typical pace. Because every session adapts, someone who already knows a topic moves through it quickly instead of sitting through an explanation they do not need.

It sits in the Tool: Codex track of the Vero AI Catalog, and can be assigned to one person, a team, or the whole company.

How it is delivered and assessed

Delivery is conversational and interactive, including guided lab, branching scenario exercises. There is no video to sit through and no slide deck to click past.

Understanding is checked with a lab assessment of 5 items, with a pass mark of 70%.

Administrators can copy this course into their own library and adapt it — edit the outline, change the duration, swap the assessment format, or ground it in internal documentation so answers cite the company's own source material.

Learners decide what belongs in Codex, in ChatGPT Work, in Chat or with engineers, write specs an agent and an engineer can both follow, run a small portfolio of tools, review what agents produce, and work with IT on data, access and approved settings. They finish by measuring impact honestly and leading adoption on their team. No code.
  • Codex for Everyone Pathway — Build small, useful tools with Codex - no coding background required - from your first tool to owning tools your team relies on. Also includes 3 optional playbooks to take any time after Essentials; they don't count toward the certificate.
